EMPOWERING TOWNSHIP & RURAL SPAZA SHOPS

The South African government has officially opened applications for the R500 million Spaza Shop Support Fund (SSSF), aimed at empowering South African-owned spaza shops in townships and rural areas. The initiative is designed to help small retailers improve operations, expand their businesses, and compete effectively in the local retail sector.

KEY FEATURES OF SSSF:

  • Funding up to R300,000 per shop through a combination of grants and interest-free loans.
  • Training and technical support in business skills, digital tools, inventory management, and financial literacy.
  • Assistance in meeting health and safety standards.
  • Encouragement to adopt digital payment systems.
  • Bulk purchasing benefits through wholesale aggregation.

WHO CAN APPLY:

  • South African citizens or naturalised citizens (prior to 1994).
  • Shops must operate in township or rural communities and comply with local by-laws.
  • CIPC and SARS registration required depending on funding level.
  • Owners must actively manage the shop.
  • Priority given to youth (18–35), women, and people with disabilities.

FUNDING OPTIONS:

  1. Up to R100,000 Package:
    • R40,000 grant for initial stock.
    • R50,000 for infrastructure upgrades.
    • Training programs worth up to R100,000.
  2. R100,000 – R300,000 Package (for registered entities):
    • Same R40,000 stock grant.
    • Up to R250,000 (50% grant, 50% loan).
    • Training programs worth up to R100,000.
