Entries are now open for the Township Entrepreneurship Awards 2017.
Township entrepreneurs, business owners and co-operatives operating across Gauteng townships are invited to enter the awards. Entries close on 16 September 2016 at 4pm.
The Township Entrepreneurship Awards are an initiative by the Gauteng Department of Economic Development. The aim of the awards is to recognise, reward and celebrate entrepreneurial talent in the township whilst supporting the province’s goal and commitment to revitalising the township economy.
According to Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Environment, Agriculture and Rural Development, Lebogang Maile, the awards are going to be bigger and better – and also the incentives for the winners will be more. He announced that there is going to be a television programme that will be launched that will feature some of the businesses that have been nominated.
MEC Maile further indicated that this initiative is not aimed to blow government’s own horn but to unleash and support what entrepreneurs in the township are doing to transform the township economy. “We want to mobilise the township entrepreneurs to realise their full potential and to also change the perception that township businesses are often informal and produce poor quality.”
He added that the Township Entrepreneurship Awards are not about the glitz and glamour but about the innovation and commitment of township businesses.
The 2016 categories are:
Food & Beverages, Tourism & Creative Industries, Retail & Finance, Service Manufacturing, Transport, Automotive & Components, Construction, Building & Real Estate, Social & Community (community centres, not for profit businesses), New/Start up enterprise, Entrepreneur with a Disability, Youth Entrepreneur of the Year, Woman Entrepreneur of the Year and the over winner Entrepreneur of the Year
The nominees will be announced on 27 October 2016 and winners will be crowned at an award ceremony in March 2017.
